Another excerpt for Weekend Writing Warriors!
This week, I’m returning to my short story “Underwood,” from which my snippet last week came. It’s named after the manual typewriters that came before electric typewriters and computers. First, a snippet from the story, and after that more of a background about it. This snippet is a little over the 8-sentence limit, so shhh don’t tell anyone!

I look for answers on the two spinner racks, each standing tall like a metal “I.” They’re packed full of Katherine’s books. On the covers are ruggedly handsome pirates, cowboys, princes, guys in leather pants, and one cop. Oddly, all of them are caught in a breeze that ruffles their hair and flops open their shirts (if they’re wearing any) to reveal bulging muscles. Under them or draped across them are fine-looking females with bodice buttons bursting from breasts that refuse to be contained. Huge, soft, plump cleavage to match ferocious muscles.
Alas, no answers are found on the covers. Instead, the men seem to mock me: You wear a medium! Ha! We thought as much, staring at your puny back every day. Would it kill you to lift some weights? Hey, you know what? You’re gonna get your butt kicked by a girl!

For a little more about this story, here’s the description from its Amazon page:
Passion rages in romance novels, and Katherine has made a living writing best-selling books of adventure and romance. But she’s not a great typist. So she’s hired Josh to type out her stories on an old Underwood manual typewriter. Katherine needs help fleshing out a scene in her new book, so she calls on Josh to role play the sword-fighting scene… and then swords flash swiftly. But when the sword play is done, the author and typist continue the roles of the story, relinquishing to the passion that flames them.
