Rio de Janeiro

Congratulations to Germany and Argentina in making it to this year’s World Cup final! Actually, congratulations to all the athletes who played in the games. You’ve given us viewers many amazing matches of The Beautiful Game.

Also, I’ve had fun finding Flickr photos of the cities in Brazil where the World Cup games have been played. I’ve discovered parts of Brazil that I never knew about (my knowledge of Brazil was very small to begin with). I had to save Rio for the last day of the World Cup. What a beautiful city!

  1. My first husband lived there for many years growing up. It’s such a rich country historically and these pictures from the site on flickr are incredible. That library – wow . So much beauty and I could not pick up a book and read anything. Stories about the favellas are a bit scary. Lucky you for going and thank you so much for sharing.

    • I would’ve been lucky to go to Rio! Instead, I just went there through these Flickr photos. Yeah, that library is something else. When it popped up in my search for photos, I knew I had to put it in. It’s not like the typical stuff of the beach or statue of Christ or the mountains, but it’s stunning.

      • You could have fooled me. That library – I was talking about it with someone because the architecture had a Moorish feel to me. Having been colonized by the Portuguese, the design made sense. History can be so beautiful…when you forget that it was a slave port that destroyed so many souls. Such is humanity though. It’s a positive fact about us humans that beauty still can exist despite our tendency towards brutality.

      • Well said, that history has brutality as well as beauty. The riches gained at the expense of others has been used to create beautiful buildings. I didn’t catch that the library has a Moorish style, but I see it now.
