Tried out a #fieryverse prompt from Twitter this morning in a couple of poems as a writing stretch…

Her tears
slide down her cheeks,
drip off her jaw,
transform into
black pearls,
which he collects
in his hands
and treasures.

On the anniversary
of his death,
she wears
a necklace of
black pearls,
and the police
still have
no idea.

  1. Both very nice! I especially like the first one. Something about the dual image of capturing tears (harkens back to the bible which is a book that haunts me) as well as the transformation of the tears into something exotic and valuable (which is a striking image as well). Very nice!

  2. I am also fascinated by the image of tears becoming jewels (my favorite onyx) — because I think when the tears are captured by the right one, they are treated as treasure.

  3. Your words haunt me, Gus. Your poetry moves me. I’m glad you’re sharing it with us. Bonus being, of course, the woman is a redhead…and they’re never redheads.
