Heart Box of Chocolates

With a small grin, he selects
the box of chocolates shaped
like a heart, knowing that he’d
already given his heart to her
years ago.

In turn, she’d filled the space
in his chest with caring, laughter,
music, the warmth of her in the
bed next to him.

Still, though, he would give her
another heart, this one filled
with chocolates — which,
in turn, were filled
by surprise flavors.

As if the chocolate itself
were not enough and
had to have another heart
to share, a rich and gentle
center that it wished to
give, out of trust.

He figured that if
her track record of caring
for his heart was any
indication, the chocolates
had nothing to worry about.

  1. I like the idea of, all that she is, filling his heart space. Lovely.
